This service is delivered by trauma trained Caseworkers, providing one to one support to individuals who are survivors of Mother and Baby Institutions, Magdalene Laundries and Workhouses.
The Caseworker will focus on the client by being proactive, resourceful and innovative in seeking a caring resolution to their issues.
Following registration and discussing your needs, your support plan will take into account your existing support network and where appropriate with your agreement, work in partnership with other service providers (GP, Community Mental Health Teams and other Health Professionals) to ensure joined up support that meets the client’s needs.
You might want to get referred to WAVE internal services such as complementary therapies, counselling, welfare advice, Trauma Training or peer support. WAVE is also working closely together with Adopt NI who can help with family tracing and retrieving records.
Caseworkers aim to improve the quality of life of those who feel socially isolated or impacted by trauma and would benefit from regular contact. This might include supporting individuals who want to make positive lifestyle changes, setting achievable goals and learning to manage ongoing health conditions, utilising the VSS ‘Individual Needs Programme’.
Based on your needs and agreed by you, the Casework support may include tailored engagement with relevant services and activities within the statutory, community and voluntary sectors.
Part of the Caseworker’s role is befriending which can make a real difference to people who find themselves feeling isolated, struggling at a time of need due to trauma, loss or another burning issue. Finding that support to help them navigate difficulties is a key aspect of case work.
Together with the client, the caseworker will review progress, leading to improved wellbeing enabling the client to move forward.
We operate an ‘Open Door’ policy for those who may need to return for additional support in the future or to attend one of our peer group supports. In addition, caseworkers organise peer support activities such as creative or health & wellbeing workshops, as well as events such as restaurant visits, day trips or residentials.
Caseworkers also deliver WAVE’s OCN Accredited ‘Building Resiliency after Trauma’ course to clients who would benefit from the course.
